G1 Boardroom Network Launch Event

Connecting leaders, driving growth

Earlier this month, more than 140 business leaders gathered at Titanic Hotel Belfast for the launch of G1 Boardroom Network.

Bringing together CEOs, Managing Directors, Non Executive Directors, Chairs, advisors, investors and senior executives from across Northern Ireland, the event focused on the changing nature of leadership, the growing role of boards and advisory appointments, and the opportunities emerging through portfolio careers.

While the event itself was a significant milestone, it was also the beginning of something much bigger.

G1 Boardroom Network has been created to connect experienced leaders with ambitious organisations, while building a trusted community where relationships, opportunities and expertise can be shared.

Why We Created G1 Boardroom Network

Over the past 15 years in executive search, I have had the privilege of meeting thousands of business leaders.

Recently, I found myself increasingly interested in a particular group. Those who had successfully transitioned into portfolio careers as Non Executive Directors, Chairs, advisors, board members and fractional leaders.

I wanted to understand how they had made that transition.

What surprised me was that their answer was rarely qualifications, experience or technical expertise alone.

Instead, almost every conversation came back to the same thing.

The strength of their network.

Not the size. The strength.

The most successful portfolio leaders had invested years building trusted relationships, contributing to their communities and developing meaningful connections. Opportunities often emerged through those relationships rather than through formal recruitment processes.

At the same time, we were seeing increasing demand from businesses looking for experienced board members, advisors and fractional executives who could bring specific expertise into their organisations.

Many organisations knew they needed support. Fewer knew where to find the right people.

G1 Boardroom Network was created to help bridge that gap.

Today, G1 Boardroom Network includes more than 400 senior leaders across Northern Ireland, Ireland and the wider UK, creating a growing community of experienced executives, business owners, Non Executive Directors, advisors and investors.

A Strong Start At Titanic Belfast

The launch event exceeded our expectations, with more than 140 senior leaders joining us for what proved to be an engaging and thought provoking morning.

The room reflected the breadth of Northern Ireland's business community, bringing together leaders from owner-managed businesses, family firms, professional services organisations, corporates, investors and advisory communities.

More importantly, it created an opportunity for conversations that rarely happen in day-to-day business life.

Senior leadership can be rewarding, but it can also be isolating. Whether leading a business, serving on a board or exploring a portfolio career, there is enormous value in hearing different perspectives from people facing similar challenges.

That spirit of openness, challenge and collaboration was evident throughout the morning.

Key Themes From The Panel Discussion

One of the highlights of the event was a panel discussion featuring Gareth Hetherington MBE, Deb Lange, Michael Black and Paul Prenter.

Each brought a unique perspective, but several themes resonated strongly with the audience.

Northern Ireland's Future Is Full Of Opportunity

Gareth Hetherington highlighted that while businesses continue to face economic and geopolitical uncertainty, Northern Ireland remains a region with genuine strengths and significant potential.

The message was not one of complacency. Rather, it was a reminder that organisations need to be prepared. Those with the right leadership, governance and strategic focus will be best positioned to take advantage of future opportunities.

Portfolio Careers Require Intentionality

Deb Lange shared valuable insights from her own portfolio career journey.

A recurring theme was that successful portfolio careers are rarely built overnight. Leaders need to be deliberate about the opportunities they pursue, realistic about the value they can bring, and patient in building the relationships that ultimately create opportunities.

For those considering their first Non Executive Director or advisory role, the message was clear: start thoughtfully and focus on roles that genuinely align with your experience and interests.

Governance Creates Value

Michael Black challenged some of the misconceptions that can surround governance.

Too often governance is viewed purely through the lens of compliance. The discussion highlighted that the best boards use governance to improve decision making, encourage constructive challenge and support long-term value creation.

Good governance is not about slowing organisations down. It is about helping them make better decisions.

The Right Appointment Starts With The Right Brief

Paul Prenter emphasised the importance of clarity when appointing Non Executive Directors, advisors and fractional leaders.

Businesses often know they need support but struggle to articulate exactly what challenge they are trying to solve.

The strongest appointments begin with a clear understanding of the organisation's needs and the specific expertise required. When that clarity exists, the impact of the appointment is significantly greater.

Why This Matters For Businesses

One of the clearest messages from the event was that organisations are thinking differently about leadership.

Not every challenge requires a full-time executive appointment.

Increasingly, businesses are exploring alternative ways to strengthen capability through Non Executive Directors, Chairs, advisory boards, interim leaders and fractional executives.

For growing businesses, family-owned firms, investor-backed organisations and companies preparing for succession, these appointments can provide access to specialist expertise, challenge and strategic insight without necessarily expanding the permanent executive team.

This is a trend we are seeing across Northern Ireland, Ireland and the wider UK.

Through G1 Search, we are increasingly supporting organisations with board appointments, Non Executive Director recruitment, Chair appointments, fractional executive placements and interim leadership solutions. G1 Boardroom Network strengthens our ability to connect organisations with experienced leaders who can add value at critical moments in their growth journey.

Ultimately, stronger leadership creates stronger organisations, and stronger organisations create stronger economies.

A Community For Current And Future Portfolio Leaders

G1 Boardroom Network is equally focused on supporting leaders who are exploring board, advisory and fractional opportunities.

Many experienced executives reach a point in their careers where they want to contribute differently. Some are considering their first Non Executive Director appointment. Others are building portfolio careers or exploring advisory opportunities alongside executive roles.

The transition can be rewarding, but it can also be difficult to navigate without access to the right network.

G1 Boardroom Network has been created for people exactly at this stage.

It provides a curated space for peer-level connection, strategic networking, access to industry experts and, for those considering future appointments, visibility of relevant board, advisory, fractional and interim opportunities across the UK and Ireland.

For many members, the value will come from relationships. For others, it may come through learning, insight or future appointments. Most likely, it will be a combination of all three.
